Meet Dr. Andrea “Drew” Courrege, Neurologist

Dr. Andrea “Drew” Courrege is a board-certified neurologist providing compassionate, patient-centered neurological care for patients throughout the Northshore, Mandeville, Covington, St. Tammany Parish, and the Greater New Orleans area. As a lifelong resident of St. Tammany Parish, she is proud to care for patients in the community she has always called home.

Raised in Mandeville and a graduate of Mandeville High School, Dr. Courrege earned her bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge before completing medical school and her Neurology Residency at LSU Health New Orleans. She combines advanced neurological expertise with a deeply personal understanding of what it means to live with a neurological condition.

A Personal Journey That Inspired a Career in Neurology

At just 12 years old, Dr. Courrege experienced a rare neurological illness following a mosquito bite that caused her immune system to attack her brain. She spent months hospitalized and continued to face lasting neurological effects throughout her recovery.

That life-changing experience gave her firsthand insight into the physical and emotional challenges patients with neurological disorders face every day. It also inspired her lifelong commitment to medicine and to helping others navigate complex neurological conditions with compassion, expertise, and hope.

Personalized Neurology Care

Dr. Courrege believes every patient deserves an individualized treatment plan that reflects their unique diagnosis, symptoms, lifestyle, and goals.

“I emphasize an individualized patient clinical experience. All patients are unique in their diagnosis, clinical presentations, and individual treatment goals. I believe in making shared decisions with my patients to foster a close physician-patient relationship.”

Her approach focuses on listening carefully, educating patients about their condition, and developing personalized treatment plans through shared decision-making. She strives to build long-term relationships founded on trust, communication, and exceptional neurological care.

Why She Chose AVALA Spine

Dr. Courrege is excited to bring comprehensive neurology services to AVALA Spine and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team dedicated to improving patients’ quality of life.

“I can’t wait to join my colleagues at AVALA Spine. From my first interaction with Dr. Justin Owen, who cared for my grandmother, and then being introduced to Dr. Samer Shamieh, I quickly knew practicing with this team was where I was supposed to be.”

Working alongside spine surgeons, pain management specialists, and rehabilitation professionals allows Dr. Courrege to provide coordinated care for patients experiencing neurological disorders, spine-related conditions, nerve disorders, headaches, and other complex neurological concerns.

A Philosophy Centered on the Patient

Dr. Courrege believes excellent neurological care goes beyond diagnosing and treating disease; it means caring for the whole person.

“One of my favorite quotes is, ‘A good physician treats the disease. A great physician treats the patient who has the disease.’ I carry this philosophy with me every day I practice neurology. I am so grateful to be at AVALA Spine and have the opportunity to form lasting relationships with my patients.”

Life Outside the Office

When she isn’t caring for patients, Dr. Courrege enjoys spending time with her husband and their two daughters, Avery and Parker. She values time with her extended family and embraces everything that makes South Louisiana special, from its incredible cuisine to the traditions and celebrations of Mardi Gras.
