Treating Migraines

Headaches and Migraines can be very hard for patients to deal with and continue a productive life. Sometimes, other symptoms can also occur. AVALA Pain’s interventional pain specialists are specially trained to diagnose rare headache disorders and help to alleviate headaches, migraines and other symptoms.

SPG Injections

The Sphenopalatine Ganglion (SPG) is a bundle of nerves in the face located behind the nose. This set of nerves carries a lot of information from the brain, including pain signals. Most pain in the face, eyes or jaw during a migraine can be linked to the SPG.

Procedure

There are several ways we can administer SPG injections. The choice of procedure would be based on the individual patient and the patient’s symptoms.

The least invasive method for performing an SPG injection is by using a catheter. The patient lies on their back with their head tilted. The physician will numb the nasal cavity, and insert a catheter into the nostril to deliver the medication to the SPG.

Another option would require an actual injection through the cheek. The doctor will give medication to help the patient relax and numb the cheek with a local anesthetic. The doctor inserts a needle through the cheek, guided by an X-ray device, to the proper position to deliver the anesthetic.

RFA of the occipital nerve

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive procedure designed to reduce or eliminate pain through the application of heat. In this procedure, an electrical current is used to burn problematic nerves, preventing them from sending pain signals. RFA may be used in patients suffering from chronic migraines or other chronic pain symptoms.

Spinal Cord Stimulator

A Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) is a small device, similar to a pacemaker, that uses electrical impulses to relieve chronic pain of the back, arms, and legs. It can also treat migraine headaches. The device masks pain signals before they reach the brain.
