Dr. Jeremy James Board Certified, Fellowship Trained

Hammond and Covington spine surgeon, Dr. Jeremy R. James, MD, is a native of Louisiana. Dr. James attended Louisiana State University before receiving a bachelor’s degree in science from Our Lady of the Lake College.

During medical school at Louisiana State Health Sciences Center, Dr. James developed an interest in degenerative and traumatic musculoskeletal disease. He went on to focus on this during his training in Orthopaedic Surgery at Louisiana State Health Sciences Center, and during his residency gained further experience in treating these ailments with a particular interest in Spine Surgery.

Dr. James’ area of expertise is in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. This approach provides smaller incisions, reduces the risk of infection, minimizes postoperative discomfort, and results in shorter recovery times.

“Fellowship Trained” means Dr. James has completed a combined Orthopaedic/Neurosurgery fellowship at the Spine Institute of Arizona. During his intensive fellowship Dr. James gained further knowledge about the treatment of disorders of the spine, as well as, minimally invasive spine surgery. The Spine Institute of Arizona has been a leading innovator of spinal devices and has developed minimally invasive techniques that have been adopted all around the world.

Dr. James, his wife and children enjoy boating and fishing on beautiful waters of South Louisiana and enjoying our great state’s culture and people. He looks forward to helping his clients regain control of their life and get back to an active pain-free lifestyle.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Dr. James is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and fellowship trained in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. His training included both non-operative and operative treatment of degenerative and traumatic disease of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine including microsurgery, minimally invasive surgery, traditional “open” surgery as well as motion preservation of the spine. He is an active member of the Louisiana Orthopaedic Association, Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, North American Spine Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. James’ offers non-operative and operative treatment of spinal disorders in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, including, but not limited to, neck and arm pain, back and leg pain, herniated discs, stenosis, spondylolisthesis, degenerative disc disease, sciatica, vertebral compression fractures, spinal trauma, and scoliosis. As a Northshore spine surgeon, Dr. James understands neck, arm, back and leg pain is a life altering condition that can decrease quality of life. Dr. James provides spine care individualized to each patient based on his or her expectations and goals.

Northshore spine surgeon, Dr. Jeremy James is only one of a handful of doctors around the world trained to use robotics during minimally invasive spine procedures.

AVALA Spine uses the Globus ExcelsiusGPS to plan each patient’s surgery based on the specific anatomy of each person. Medical images are imported into ExcelsiusGPS and the surgeon uses them to determine the size and placement of each implant. ExcelsiusGPS will also guide the surgeon to the specific region of your spine to help place implants accurately. Evaluation and Treatment Process

Surgery is only recommended after all non-operative treatment options have been explored and the patient and their families have been educated on the potential risks, as well as, benefits of surgery in order to make an informed decision. When surgery is indicated, Dr. James provides a patient-specific innovative approach by blending traditional spine surgical principles with cutting-edge surgical techniques by minimally invasive means that decrease incision size, decrease infection risk, decrease hospital stay and lead to a faster recovery to a pain-free lifestyle.
