HOLIDAY BACK INJURIES
Hi, I’m Sean Michael Rider, a spine surgeon with AVALA Spine. I am a board-certified orthopedic physician with fellowship training in spine surgery. I am trained in minimally invasive spine surgery which helps me provide patients with smaller incisions, reduced risk of infection, minimized postoperative discomfort, and results in shorter recovery times. I look forward to helping you in Slidell, Metairie, Hammond, or Covington!

With the holidays right around the corner, the last thing anyone wants is to miss out on family fun due to back pain from lifting, decorating, or cooking. Here are a few simple tips to keep your back safe and help you enjoy a joyful, injury-free holiday season:
LIFT SMARTER, NOT HARDER
When handling heavy objects (like the big turkey or those holiday decorations), don’t be afraid to ask for help. Keep the load close to your body, make sure your walking path is clear, and lift with your knees—not your back! Remember, a steady lift is a safe lift.
KEEP GOOD POSTURE IN MIND
For a strong and supported lift, use good posture:
- Keep your back straight, tighten your core, and bend with your knees.
- Maintain a wide stance with your elbows and arms close to your body.
- Avoid bending at the hips or twisting—these movements put unnecessary strain on your back.
AVOID FATIGUE AND RISKY HEIGHTS
Holiday prep can be exhausting, so take breaks and avoid lifting when tired. It’s best to avoid ladders or heights when you’re fatigued, and keep lifting smooth and steady to prevent accidents.
Most importantly, remember to enjoy the season with family and friends! These simple pointers can help keep you out of the doctor’s office, but we’re always here if you need us. Wishing you a safe and wonderful holiday season!
