High heels during pregnancy spelled disaster for Victoria Beckham’s back
Victoria Beckham has been a fashion icon around the world since she rose to fame as Posh Spice, in the British Pop Group – The Spice Girls, but her fashion choices led to a massive amount of back pain and a slipped disc.
It was 2011 when Beckham made headlines for her outfit choice while attending the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. She wore a black dress with 5-inch Louboutin heels to the nuptials during the third trimester of her pregnancy with her daughter, Harper Seven.
Her choice to continue wearing heels through her pregnancy added with her needing a Cesarion Section when delivering the baby added too much pressure to her back and she ended up with a slipped disc, also known as a herniated disc.
The pain was reportedly so bad, she could not hold her newborn daughter.
- Symptoms of a herniated disc
- Dull or throbbing lower back pain
- Lower back stiffness and/or muscle spasms
- Leg pain radiating along the path of the large sciatic nerve in back of the leg
- Searing, radiating, sharp, or electric pain in one leg
- Numbness, weakness, and/or tingling in the leg, foot, and/or toes
- Drop foot – difficulty lifting the foot when walking or standing on the ball of the foot
- Pain following sitting or standing for a long time
- Intense leg pain when bending forward at the waist
Did her high heels cause the slipped disc?
There is no data that says high heels cause disc herniations. Our doctors did not evaluate Mrs. Beckham and cannot be sure what exactly caused the injury. It is normally recommended to pregnant women to wear flats – because the added baby weight puts pressure on the spine – and high heels may make it worse.
Beckham was able to treat the slipped disc without going through a spine surgery – instead treating with painkillers and physical therapy until the pain subsided. It’s an option our doctors always tend to recommend for back pain. If the pain can be treated and resolved without surgery – our doctors will work with you to set up a treatment plan.
