Rene Russo battling scoliosis since middle school
Avoiding a surgical procedure
Doctors diagnosed Rene Russo with Scoliosis when she was ten. She spoke to Hudson Valley Scoliosis Correction Center about her experiences while wearing a back brace.
“I used to put a bra on top of the body cast with falsies in it,” she explained. “Because I wanted to look like I had a chest.”
She told Hudson Valley she wore a brace for four years, and it has helped her avoid surgery. She still treats her condition with acupuncture and chiropractic care, according to ProMed Spine.
Many Forms
There are 4 common kinds of scoliosis affecting people sometimes from birth.
Congenital Scoliosis affects newborns, but is considerably more rare. 1 in 10,000 babies suffer with it. Russo most likely has Idiopathic Scoliosis. It presents in kids between 10 and 16-years-old and it’s more common in girls. Doctors diagnosed Russo at 1o years old.
Adults over 55 can also develop “Degenerative Scoliosis” as part of the aging process. People suffering with brain, spinal cord, or muscular disorders may develop Neuromuscular Scoliosis.

The Causes
We don’t know what exactly causes scoliosis. It can run in families.
- Less common types can be caused by:
- Neuromuscular conditions, such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy
- Birth defects affecting the development of the bones of the spine
- Injuries to or infections of the spine
